UNTITLED, ART. Miami Beach 2018

December 5 - 9, 2018
Booth A40
Diane Rosenstein Gallery is pleased to announce our participation in UNTITLED, Art Miami Beach 2018 with a two-artist booth featuring paintings by Sarah Mikenis and ceramics by Jesse Edwards.

Sarah Mikenis makes sculptural paintings that bring a Baroque sensibility to Geometric Abstraction. She manipulates canvas to appear draped and gathered over a skeleton of stretcher bars, as if the painting itself is clinging to a bodily form. Her new series of striped paintings, made in her Los Angeles studio, allude to vertical blinds and challenge the relationship between the physical and the optical. For her first exhibition in Miami, Mikenis offers a predominantly monochromatic series that liberates Minimalist ideals.

Jesse Edwards will present white and blue glazed “Card Houses” and figurative sculptures. The artist, who is based in New York City, trained in DelftBlue pottery and uses 17th C.  glazing techniques over his hand built clay forms. His ongoing series of ceramic card houses continue a recurring motif in his practice, which includes oil painting. These built structures are a metaphor of fragility and tentative structure, and bring a 21stcentury spin on miniature Chinoiserie pagodas. His tabletop figures are absorbed in their phones; and his menageries of bears depict an emotional natural landscape. Taken together, these ceramics blur the boundaries between traditional and contemporary forms of craft and representation, which is the core of Edwards’ practice.
