Sarah Mikenis is a painter based in Los Angeles. She creates striped and patterned compositions that are seemingly draped and gathered over a skeleton of stretcher bars as if the painting itself is a loose garment in zero gravity. Mikenis brings a Baroque sensibility to geometric abstraction, a balance between the surface and the subliminal.
“My body and touch seem more present in these works…Creating the sculptural form is a very physical process in which I am on the ground pulling, twisting, and pushing canvas. I think freedom plays an important role in this work.”
Mikenis’ sculptural paintings are a record of both that tension and a capacious play of
light and color.
