For his first solo exhibition with Diane Rosenstein Gallery, Los Angeles-based interdisciplinary artist Lorenzo Hurtado Segovia will show a suite of works: four recent landscape paintings, a woven textile, and a pall – a sculpture in drawn textile, beadwork, and acrylic paint. Titled Vida, pasión, y muerte (2017), it stands in the middle of the gallery space he has called 'A Viewing Room.'

Lorenzo Hurtado Segovia: A Viewing Room

For his first solo exhibition with Diane Rosenstein Gallery, Los Angeles-based interdisciplinary artist Lorenzo Hurtado Segovia will show four recent landscape paintings, a woven textile, and a pall – a sculpture in drawn textile, beadwork, and acrylic paint. Titled Vida, pasión, y muerte (2017), it stands in the middle of the gallery space he has called 'A Viewing Room.' 

 

The artist writes, “The Divine is represented in myriad ways throughout human existence. The experience of the Divine during a lifetime is a mixture of awe, passion, pain, and longing…until we die. This viewing room offers a contemplation on paradoxical embodiments of God as cloud and fire in scripture. This uncertainty can be illustrated by our dependence on the sun for growth while needing shelter from it as in a tent. Four paintings depict sunny environments and cooling opportunities. Nube lumbre, 2023, shows a fiery cloud, like those we see in LA when the sun hits just perfectly after a mild, cooling shower.”

 

Lorenzo Hurtado Segovia (Mexico, b. 1979) received a BA from UCLA (2003) and his MFA from Otis College of Art and Design (2007). His artwork is rooted in craft traditions, Christian theology, art history, and ethnographic motifs. His weavings and Papeles tejido reflect his heritage, but also serve as expanded commentary on indigenous traditions. Solo exhibitions include Mis Papeles, Vincent Prince Art Museum, Monterey Park, CA (2015) and Lorenzo Hurtado Segovia: Wild Frontier, David Allan Hubbard Library, Fuller Theological Seminary, Pasadena, CA (2014); he was included in Signal To Noise, curated by Michael Slenske, Diane Rosenstein Gallery, Los Angeles (2024); Quadrant, Torrance Art Museum, Torrance, CA (2022); Specific Abstractions, curated by Matthew Stromberg, Charlie James Gallery, Los Angeles, CA (2019); Paperworks, Craft and Folk Art Museum, Los Angeles, CA (2015); and Selections from the Grunwald Center and the Hammer Contemporary Collection, Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, CA (2013). Hurtado Segovia’s work is in the permanent collections of the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, CA; University of La Verne, La Verne, CA; La Jolla Community Foundation/Murals of La Jolla, La Jolla, CA; and Cerritos College, Norwalk, CA. He is a Professor at the Otis College of Art and Design, Los Angeles.
